For thousands of years the women in the Indian subcontinent have worn saris. The sari one of the world's most ancient, enduring and elegant garments; a single rectangle measuring several yards of cloth that is draped and tucked around the body. The variety of sari designs, fabrics and methods of draping are as complex and diverse as the cultures which inhabit the vast Indian subcontinent. Saris are woven from silk and cotton, embroidered with finely-spun gold and silver thread, laced with beads and stones, decorated with handblock prints. Symbols of fertility, divinity and feminine power are represented by motifs of flowers, fruits, planets, star and the five elements, woven into the sari's texture.
